An Eye-Pleasing Shopping Experience for Design Lovers

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, and Berlin has been beaming with events and exhibitions paying homage to one of the most influential movements in the field of design and architecture.

If you would like to experience the influence of the movement in a real-life setting all while treating yourself, KaDeWe should be your next stop.

KaDeWe stands for Kaufhaus des Westens (German for “Department Store of the West”) and first opened in 1907. It is the second largest department store in Europe, which makes it a very popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Whether you are after a unique eating and drinking experience on the top floor or want to discover the latest trends in the world of fashion, beauty or interior, this department store is an unmissable sight.

In 2017, French architect and designer India Mahdavi was asked to redesign the womenswear section of the store and decided to celebrate Berlin’s cultural heritage by drawing inspiration from the iconic Bauhaus style. Following a bold and dramatic approach, she chose striking geometrical patterns on the floor and walls and a neutral colour palette counterbalanced by luxurious green velvet curtains, gold accents and pale pink carpeting.

The blend of curves and straight lines in the floor patterns conveys a dynamic and energetic feeling. Did you know that no less than 1.800 sqm of Santamargherita marble were used for this project? In terms of products, India Mahdavi chose to use four different kinds of SM Marble, namely Bianco Neve, Nero Portoro, Rosso Levanto and Rosa Perlino.

We can only recommend you experience this impressive design and shopping experience for yourself, so don’t miss out during your next stop in Berlin!
